mixed
In the society we live in, individuals are expected to fit into racial and ethnic boxes. When they don’t, an "other" option is presented, but not always entirely accepted by our society. Facing challenges not only from outside one’s identities but also from within them can lead to alienation for not being "authentic enough." Not "white" enough, not "black" enough, not "hispanic" enough. To be mixed is to belong to multiple worlds, to be malleable between and throughout those worlds and no two experiences are quite the same.
mixed is a look into the lives and experiences of five individuals who identify as such. My work with mixed aims to share the multifaceted experiences of being mixed and what it means to those who are-- the positive, the negative, and everything in between. The digital medium that facilitates the work speaks to the idea that identity is deeper than face-value. Through the use of modals, the user is required to dig deeper into the piece to unveil the responses of the interviewees and their experiences.
The ever-present challenge of being "enough" is the driving force that inspired this work. Throughout the process, I gained a more positive takeaway: even with the challenges and obstacles, there is beauty in belonging to multiple worlds.
